Getting Kubuntu 12.04 LTS

Upgrading from Previous Versions

Direct upgrades to 12.04 are only possible from 10.04 LTS and 11.10.

Download a Disk Image

Download an image.

Instructions for burning the image to a CD/DVD or USB flash drive can be found on the Burning ISO Howto.

We recommend you learn how to check your CD image so your pre-release is as its supposed to be. Compare your MD5 checksum with the correct ones found alongside the CD images.

12.04 LTS Highlights – Updates from the KDE community

Plasma and Applications 4.8

The latest stable release of KDE’s Plasma Workspaces and Applications brings new features and improvements all around. Highlights include :

  • Improvements in speed and rendering in Dolphin
  • Redesigned power management configuration – settings are now Activity-aware
  • New Icon Tasks provides an alternative icon-only taskbar

Amarok 2.5

This new and improved version of the default music player features re-written USB mass storage support, native support for remote NFS & SMB/CIFS collections, GPodder.net podcast synchronisation and an integrated Amazon MP3 store.

Rekonq and OwnCloud Updates

The WebKit based browser Rekonq has been updated to make it faster and more stable.

The OwnCloud self-hosting cloud solution has also had a major upgrade with slicker UI and more apps such as a streaming music player.


12.04 LTS – New from Kubuntu

Software Center and Updater

Our Muon update tool has had a lot of improvements. Updates are split up into three sections for easier browsing. A changelog viewer allows you to examine what is new. During update installation, a progress bar shows download and installation progress.


Our Muon Software Center has improvements including warning when an application removal will remove other packages and a more friendly screenshot viewer.

New Applications Available

We have provided some new and interesting software for use.


Calligra Suite

A new life for the old KOffice suite brings the document and creativity suite to a new audience. Now features top MS Office file import filters.

Calligra comes with the DVD images and is available from Muon Software Center.


KDE Telepathy

Instant Messaging has changed and so has our software with Telepathy KDE. You can easily set it up to talk on GTalk or Facebook as well as MSN and many other protocols.

KDE Telepathy is available from Muon Software Center.


Kubuntu Active Technology Preview

Kubuntu Active is a new Ubuntu flavour for tablets. It uses Plasma Active and the new UIs designed for tablets. This preview release is currently available for i386 only at this time, as an image to put on USB keys.
